Hallucinations and Hiccups: When AI Gets It Wrong
We've spent the last few posts exploring the incredible things AI can do. Now, it's time for a reality check. As impressive as these tools are, they are flawed in ways that can be surprising and sometimes dangerous if you aren't paying attention.
To use AI safely, you must understand its limits.
The "Hallucination" Problem
The most famous flaw of modern AI is the "hallucination." A hallucination is when an AI confidently presents false or invented information as if it were an absolute fact.
Why does this happen? Remember our post on chatbots: they are essentially advanced autocomplete engines. They don't have a database of "true facts" they look up. They are just predicting the next word based on patterns.
Sometimes, the math points them toward a sentence that sounds incredibly realistic but is entirely fiction. An AI might invent a historical event, cite a book that doesn't exist, or confidently give you the wrong advice, all while sounding like an expert.
Other Common Hiccups
- Math Failures: Because chatbots are designed for language, they often struggle with basic math or strict logic.
- Goldfish Memory: AI tools have a limited memory for a single conversation. If a chat goes on too long, the AI might "forget" rules you gave it at the beginning.
- Outdated Information: Many AIs are trained on data up to a specific date. Unless it can search the live internet, it might not know about recent news.
The Human in the Loop
The golden rule of using modern AI is: Trust, but verify.
AI is an incredible tool for brainstorming and writing rough drafts, but it should never be the final word on matters of fact, safety, or business decisions. You, the human, must always remain the editor, fact-checker, and final decision-maker.
In our next post, we will look at the broader, societal challenges of AI, focusing on ethics and bias.
